The original inspiration of butterless, eggless, milkless cake recipe dates back to the medieval era but the recipe was introduced by European settlers in America. Spices and dry fruits were popular ingredients of that time and later during World Wars, this cake became dessert of many European and American homes. Baking powder/soda substituted the eggs and water was used instead of milk. In present days, vegans love this cake as there is no animal product used in it.   • cup packed brown sugar
  • cup water
  • cup raisins
  • cup margarine
  • teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • teaspoon ground cloves
  • teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • cups all-purpose flour
  • teaspoon baking powder
  • teaspoon baking soda
  • teaspoon salt


  • In a heavy bottomed saucepan, combine first seven ingredients
  • Bring to a boil and then cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally
  • Cool to room temperature
  • In a bowl, mix the flour, baking powder, baking soda, raisins, and salt
  • Bake in pre-heated oven at 350 degree for 45-50min
  • You have to let it cool for 10 minutes and then bring it to a wire rack
