Quintessential Indian fast food – pakoda is originally deep fried snacks known for its crispiness and mouth-watering taste. In Southern states of India, it is known as bajji. Two basic ingredients are used to prepare pakodas, the first is the flour that is used to prepare the batter and the second is various vegetables like onion, potato, eggplant, plantain, etc. Also poultry and seafood are used to prepare non-vegetarian pakodas. Today, I will be sharing with you the onion pakoda recipe. It is a quiet popular snack recipe all over the country and does not take much of your time or effort to prepare it.


  • 2 large onions
  • 1 cup Bengal gram flour (besan)
  • 1/4 cup rice flour
  • 1 tablespoons corn flour
  • 2 finely chopped green chillies
  • 1 teaspoon red chilli powder
  • A few curry leaves/ coriander leaves
  • A pinch of soda
  • Oil for deep frying
  • Salt to taste


  • Slice the onions, green chillis, and curry leaves
  • Add the spice powders, herbs, and salt to it and keep aside
  • Now make flour mix by adding all the flours to the onion mix
  • Add a little oil or water if needed
  • Mix it till you get the crumbly texture
  • Allow the mixture to rest for 10 minutes
  • Now heat oil in heavy bottomed kadai or pan and deep fry them on medium heat
  • Fry till they turn golden brown
  • Remove them on absorbent or kitchen papers to soak the remaining oil paper
  • Serve hot with tea or coffee as evening snacks
