Bitter gourd is the vegetable with highest medicinal value. Bitter gourd is generally consumed cooked in the green or early yellowing stage. Haagalkai sweet gojju with ghee is one of the tastiest curries when served with chapati 's or roti's. The bitter taste of the vegetable can be removed only when cooked properly.


  • 2 large bitter gourd
  • 2 tbsp sambar powder
  • 2 tbsp jaggery powder
  • 1 goose berry sized tamarind
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1/4 tsp asafoetida
  • 7-8 curry leaves
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • for paste: 2 red chilli
  • 1 onion chopped (roast in 1tsp oil)
  • 1 tbsp sesame seeds
  • 1 tbsp dry grated coconut
  • 1 tbsp roasted peanut


  • Wash and cut the bitter gourd to small pieces.
  • Heat a oil in pan fry the bitter gourd pieces for few min.
  • Add asafeotida, curry leaves, turmeric powder, tarmind extract, sambar powder and paste,saute till raw smell goes off.
  • Add water if needed ,cook for 10min .Serve hot with rice,chapathi.
